The art of language goes beyond words and communicating them. Language influences our thought processes and reflects our culture. Writing allows these ideas and values to be preserved. The Molokai Arts Center (MAC) is excited to have writing workshop opportunities for Molokai residents and visitors to be mentored and inspired by its current Artist in Residence, Lynnette Beers.

Lynnette, an author and professor of creative writing, literature, and composition, is currently working on her fourth novel. The MAC’s Artist in Residence program allows her the opportunity “to feel (her) father’s Hawaiian roots and get more in touch with Hawaiian culture” while giving our community the opportunity to engage in her work. She is the author of the novels Saving Sam and Just Beyond the Shining River and has just completed a third novel, titled Caught Inside. She will have her books available for purchase and signing.

The workshop, “Writing A Memoir,” will be held on Tuesday, June 25, at Kualapu’u School, from 4:30-7:30 pm. Lynnette has a passion for “helping beginning writers find their voice, especially when writing autobiographical pieces.” Participants will be looking at short memoir pieces and doing writing exercises to help them write “with the whole person,” as Virginia Woolf would say, because “If you do not tell the truth about yourself you cannot tell it about other people.” Cost is $15 (Members $12). Deadline to register is June 24th.
