DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year!\n\nCome celebrate all that the Molokai Arts Center (MAC) has accomplished in fifteen years and help us continue our efforts to create outstanding educational opportunities in the visual and performing arts!\n\nWhat’s the Soup ‘R Bowl you ask? It’s the MAC’s premier event that visitors and part-time residents plan their visits around. It’s the art lover’s haven for unique finds\, primarily by Molokai artists (all donations welcome!). Tickets will only be sold online this year and you do not need a Paypal account in order to buy tickets (there is a credit card option). Since this is a fundraiser\, there will not be a member discount offered.\n\nLast year\, COVID regulations were thrust upon us right after the Soup ‘R Bowl. This year\, instead of imagining a year without Soup ‘R Bowl\, the MAC created a COVID-compliant walk-through\, take-out experience. If you’ve been collecting ceramic soup bowls every year you don’t have to miss one. This year’s soup choices are Portuguese Bean Soup\, Lobster Bisque\, and Thai Coconut Lentil Soup. The food is being prepared and served by Coffee and Friends located in Kualapuu Business Center.\n\nTo ensure socially distant participants\, tickets will be sold for entrance by the hour. With a $40 gold ticket (entry from 4-5pm)\, you get to meet the artists who handcrafted the bowls and have the first choice selection of a bowl and a soup meal. $35 silver tickets (entry from 5-6pm) get the next selection of bowls and a soup meal. $30 bronze tickets (entry from 6-7pm) get to choose from what’s left of the ceramic bowls and soups. Online ticket sales end Friday\, March 5.\n\nIF there are any ceramic bowls and soups left\, walk-ins will be welcome between 7-8pm for $20. Announcement will be made at the event at that time and on Facebook.\n\nParticipants will need to arrive within their designated hour and stand in line 6 ft apart through the entire experience. At the entrance\, participants will receive a ticket for a ceramic bowl and a soup choice. We will do temperature checks and masks will be required. Hand sanitizers will be placed at each table\, from entrance to exit.\n\nEmail us or message Molokai Arts Center Facebook page if you have any questions. You may also call and eave a message at the MAC (808) 567-9696.\n\n\n\n*note: on line ticket sales will end on March 5th.

SUMMARY:"Honoring Our Ancestors with Our Talents" Presentation by Brook Kapūkuniahi Parker
DESCRIPTION:The Molokai Arts Center’s\nHawaiian Arts Program Presents\nNative Hawaiian artist and historian\nBrook Kapūkuniahi Parker\non Wednesday\, November 20\, 2019\n5pm- 7pm\nat the Molokai Public Library.\n\n  \nThis month\, MAC at the library brings to you\, Brook Kapūkuniahi Parker. Brook Parker’s presentation\, “Honoring Our Ancestors with Our Talents\,” features the Lahui Ancestor Scroll Chart (pictured below) he recently completed. Parker has spent thousands of hours researching and creating original portrait paintings depicting Hawaii’s royal history. He combined his art work with genealogy done by his late uncles Wayne Davis and Francis Ching\, and his late father David Parker to create this valuable labor of love.\n\n  \nAs a child\, Brook was greatly influenced in the arts by his father David\, a gifted\, self taught artist and painter\, Hawaiian historian\, genealogist and writer. As Brook grew older\, his father’s interest became his own\, and with no formal art school training\, his father’s library of art books\, Hawaiian history books & books of other interests became his other teachers.\n\n  \nBrook’s family roots run deep in the islands. He is a direct descendant of John Palmer Parker\, founder of the Parker Ranch on the Big Island of Hawaii. John Parker’s wife\, Rachael Keli’ikipikānekaolohaka ‘Ohiakū was a great-granddaughter of Kamehameha the Great and his wife Kanekapolei. He is the great-grandson of Robert Parker Waipa\, a captain of the royal household guard under King David Kalakaua.\n\n  \nThe majority of Brook’s art portrays the deep love and admiration he has for his ancestors. In MidWeek\, Mufi Hanneman noted\, “For Brook Parker\, the legacy of his ancestors\, the war battles and stories of the Hawaiian people are etched in his heart\, making it easy for the local artist to preserve history through every brushstroke that he swipes on his canvases. The stories he shares through his portraits bring inspiration and a clearer understanding of what Hawaiians and their royalty lived through.” In addition to his paintings and drawings\, Brook is a sought-after historian and lecturer and is also a skilled artisan of Hawaiian weaponry and crafts.\n\n  \nJoanie Pruet\, also a descendent of Kanekapolei\, will display her copy of Parker’s Lahui Ancestor Scroll Chart.\n\n  \nMAC at the Library is free and brought to you by the Molokai Arts Center and Molokai Public Library.\n\n

These funds helped us bring more visiting artists to the island and helped supply our keiki and adult workshops.\n\nWe hope you will help support the only non-profit art education program on Molokai.

SUMMARY:Registration for the Naked Raku Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Naked Raku Workshop\nKate & Will Jacobson\nSat. Nov. 2 and Sun. Nov. 3\n1:00 – 6:00 PM\nMolokai Arts Center\nSOLD OUT!!\n\n  \n\nMolokai Arts Center is excited to bring Kate & Will Jacobson\, widely recognized as the originators of Naked Raku and other alternative bare clay firing techniques\, to Molokai for a two-day hands-on workshop\, Saturday\, November 2 and Sunday\, November 3\, from 1-6pm. The Jacobsons have been collaborating potters for over forty years and have exhibited their art and taught workshops throughout the world. They have had studios in Sedona\, Arizona; Olympic Peninsula\, Washington\, and currently have one on the Big Island.\n\n  \nWhat is Naked Raku? Naked raku is a variation of the raku technique in which a slip is applied to the pot before it is placed in the raku kiln. The slip cracks and breaks apart during the firing and is chipped off after to reveal a blackened crackle pattern. Kate and Will Jacobson figured out a way to add some color and drawn imagery in the naked raku technique. There is a great article on them in this issue of Ceramic Arts Daily Network publication.\n\n  \nParticipants will explore surface decoration and Naked Raku firing techniques. The Jacobsons will demonstrate their methods of wheel throwing\, slab construction\, mica\, infusion\, sodium silicate and post reduction techniques.\n\n  \nThe Jacobsons’ current work is inspired by the concept of living in the center of the Pacific Rim. Hawaii is a very elemental island with trembling blue horizons\, slowly creeping rivers of lava and starry\, starry night skies. There is a continual awareness and respect for the fierce power and tender fragility of life. When you look at their art\, you get a glimpse into their world filled with wonder and awe. You can visit their website to get a glimpse of some of their stunning works of art using this technique.\n\n  \nWith growing evidence of how climate change will impact island cultures\, the Jacobsons “hope to raise awareness and celebrate the beauty and strength of the ocean that surrounds\, nurtures\, and unites us all.”\n\nCost is $75 non-members\, $60 members.\nPLEASE NOTE: THIS WORKSHOP IS SOLD OUT!!!
